A Snapshot of Medicare in Georgia

In Georgia, Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage are almost equally popular. Of all Medicare enrollees in the state, 55% chose a Medicare Advantage plan as their coverage option. The remaining 45% chose Original Medicare.

Since Original Medicare doesn't include prescription drug coverage by default, Georgia beneficiaries may choose to purchase a standalone Part D plan. Alternatively, they may choose a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

To reduce out-of-pocket costs, those on Original Medicare can also purchase a Medicare Supplement plan, also known as a Medigap plan. Each plan type has a letter designation that reflects the benefits it offers. Plans with the same letter offer the same basic benefits, regardless of the insurance company.

Every individual who qualifies for Medicare can choose the coverage option that fits them best, even if a spouse or other family member chooses a different option. So, one spouse may choose a Medicare Advantage plan while the other chooses Original Medicare with a Medigap plan instead.

How to apply for Medicare in Georgia?

Medicare eligibility in Georgia follows the same nationwide rules as everywhere else in the country. You qualify for Medicare as a US citizen if you meet one of these criteria:

  • You're 65 or older
  • You have a qualifying disability, such as End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS
  • You've received SSDI for 24 months or more

Enrolling in Georgia takes three key steps:

  1. Sign up for Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)
  2. Decide on your supplemental coverage:
    • Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
    • Medicare Advantage (Part C)
    • Part D (prescription drug coverage)
  3. Confirm your doctors are in network, update your pharmacy with your new plan, and activate any additional benefits included with your coverage

FAQs

What can a Medicare agent help me evaluate when choosing coverage in Georgia?

Chapter's licensed Medicare agents in Georgia can offer free advice and support throughout the process. Schedule a free consultation or call Chapter at (855) 900-2427 to get your questions answered.

When should Georgia residents sign up for Medicare?

While you aren’t eligible to receive Medicare benefits until the month you turn 65, Georgia residents can sign up for Medicare as early as three months before the month they turn 65. They can also sign up during their 65th birth month and up to three months after. Those who miss their Initial Enrollment Period and don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period will need to wait until the General Enrollment Period, which goes from January 1 through March 31. If they use the General Enrollment Period, they may also face late enrollment penalties.

How can where I live in Georgia affect my Medicare Advantage doctor network?

Private insurers choose which Medicare Advantage plans they offer in different areas within Georgia. They also decide on provider networks tailored to each plan. Because location can directly affect each plan's provider network, enrollees should check whether their preferred doctors and facilities participate in the network of any plan they consider. Using doctors and facilities outside a plan's network for nonemergency services may cost more or not be covered at all under some plans.

Does Medicare cover routine dental, vision, and hearing care in Georgia?

Original Medicare doesn't cover routine dental care, eye exams for glasses, or hearing aids, but it does cover certain medically necessary services in these categories. Many Medicare Advantage plans, however, offer varying levels of coverage for dental, vision, and hearing services. Choosing a plan with the right coverage can help you access necessary services while minimizing out-of-pocket costs.
