Whether you're running errands, heading to medical appointments, or visiting friends, Uber offers several features and services that can make your ride experience more convenient and comfortable.

Uber is a platform-based transportation company that connects passengers with drivers via a smartphone app for on-demand, reliable transportation. The app allows you to request rides, food deliveries, courier services, and more.
Uber offers different transportation options, including:
UberX (standard)
UberGreen (eco-friendly)
UberXL (larger vehicles)
UberComfort (more spacious rides)
UberReserve (scheduled rides)
UberLux (luxury rides)
UberASSIST (for extra assistance)
You can also choose UberPool to share a ride with others going in the same direction, which can be a cost-effective option.
For older adults, Uber offers flexibility and independence that you may not get with traditional taxi services. However, if you’re not accustomed to using smartphone apps, that can pose a barrier when requesting a ride.
Uber's security and safety features enable you to share your trip details with loved ones, who can track the ride in real-time and receive notifications when you've arrived at your destination. Uber Caregiver is a new service offered by Uber to help older adults or people with disabilities who need additional assistance. With Uber Caregiver, a family member, friend, or professional caregiver can use the recipient’s health insurance benefits* to arrange and pay for eligible rides.
These rides can include trips to doctor’s appointments, grocery runs, or picking up medical supplies. Caregivers can also track rides and communicate with both the driver and the rider via a three-way chat feature.
*Those enrolled for notifications will receive a notice when an insurance provider (Medicare, Medicaid, or other) is added as an Uber Caregiver partner.

UberASSIST: UberASSIST is a specialized service for riders who need extra help getting in and out of the car, whether due to the use of mobility devices or simply needing assistance with bags or personal items. (This service is available in select cities.)
In-app communication with drivers: Riders can easily contact their driver through the app via text or call. Riders can reach out to the driver to clarify any uncertainties, including pick-up and drop-off locations before the ride.
Scheduled rides: Users can schedule rides in advance through the app, making it easier to plan transportation for medical appointments, social events, or errands, eliminating the uncertainty of last-minute booking.
To make your experience with Uber easier and more enjoyable, here are some helpful tips.
If you’re unfamiliar or uncomfortable using smartphones and apps, ask someone to help set up your account with you and show you the basics.
Depending on your city, services like UberASSIST and UberWAV (wheelchair-accessible vehicles) may be available.
Ask around in senior or community centers and subscribe to Uber’s email list to find out about senior discounts and promotions.
Before entering the car, double check the make, model, and license plate of the car, as well as the driver’s name.
Store a debit card or credit card in the app for quick and easy payment.
The most common way to request transport is through the Uber app. However, if someone can’t or doesn’t want to use the smartphone app, they can still use Uber services.

While Uber is one of the most widely recognized ride-hailing services, there are other options, some of which are tailored specifically to older adults:
GoGoGrandparent: As the name suggests, this ride-sharing service is designed specifically for older adults. Riders can request a ride by phone call (no smartphone required). The service then connects the rider with Uber and Lyft drivers, finding a ride for the adult without the hassle of a mobile app.
SilverRide: SilverRide is another platform specifically for older adults in select cities, including Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Central Florida, and San Francisco. It’s ideal for seniors who require additional assistance or have other specific needs, as the drivers are trained to help with mobility needs, including entering and exiting the vehicle.
Lyft: The Lyft app is very similar to Uber. Many riders check the prices on both apps before deciding which to book.
Taxis: Of course, you can always go with a traditional taxi to get from point A to point B! Just call your local taxi company to get a car.
There are a lot of private transportation options available, making it easier than ever to get a car to take you to where you need to go. The costs of ridesharing apps can add up, and not all of these options will have a senior discount. You may consider public transportation to save money in some cases. Additionally, some Medicare Advantage plans may pay for rides to doctor appointments.
