A Snapshot of Medicare in Utah

In Utah, both Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans are popular coverage options. In the state, 48% of Medicare beneficiaries have Original Medicare and 52% have a Medicare Advantage plan. People on Original Medicare may also choose to enroll in a Medigap plan and Part D prescription drug plan.

Original Medicare doesn't cover prescription drugs, but people on Medicare can purchase a Part D plan to add prescription coverage. Most people on Medicare Advantage choose a plan that includes prescription drug coverage. If their Medicare Advantage plan does not include Part D coverage, however, they can purchase a separate Part D plan.

Original Medicare only covers about 80% of the cost of covered services, and there’s no cap on out-of-pocket costs. Many people on Original Medicare choose to add Medicare Supplement coverage to reduce their out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Supplement plans are also often called Medigap plans because they fill the cost gaps left by Original Medicare. There are ten Medigap plans available in Utah, each named by a letter from A-N. Plans of the same letter have the same benefits.

Utah residents who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid are known as dual-eligible individuals. These people have access to special types of plans and savings programs to help them receive the care they need.

How to apply for Medicare in Utah?

Medicare eligibility in Utah follows the same nationwide rules as everywhere else in the country. You qualify for Medicare as a US citizen if you meet one of these criteria:

  • You're 65 or older
  • You have a qualifying disability, such as End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS
  • You've received SSDI for 24 months or more

Enrolling in Utah takes three key steps:

  1. Sign up for Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)
  2. Decide on your supplemental coverage:
    • Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
    • Medicare Advantage (Part C)
    • Part D (prescription drug coverage)
  3. Confirm your doctors are in network, update your pharmacy with your new plan, and activate any additional benefits included with your coverage

How can my county affect Medicare Advantage options and provider networks in Utah?

Private insurers offer different Medicare Advantage plans in different counties. Plans available to you will have different provider networks, costs, and benefits. That's why it's a good idea to review all your options before committing to any Medicare Advantage plan.

How does Utah's Medigap birthday rule work?

In Utah, Medigap policyholders have an annual election period beginning on their birthday and lasting 60 days. During that period, they can switch to another policy from their current insurer with equal or lesser benefits without going through medical underwriting. This means insurers can't deny coverage or increase premiums based on health history.

Can Utah residents switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage?

There are specific enrollment periods that allow you to move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Some enrollment periods depend on what your existing coverage is. The Annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7. During this period both Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries can change coverage. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 through March 31. During this period, only those on Medicare Advantage plans can make changes to their coverage. There are also Special Enrollment Periods that may allow you to change your coverage.
